Andre Drummond returns 'home' to Middlesex YMCA, where his path to UConn and the NBA began

MIDDLETOWN — The thickest and strongest roots of Andre Drummond’s basketball career weave through the narrow hallways that lead to the charming little gym at the Middlesex YMCA, which looked and felt to Drummond on Saturday the way it always has.

“Like home,” he said. “This is like home to me.”

Many of the people are the same, years later. So is the court. The wooden backboards, too. It’s surprising that Drummond, one of the top prospects and players in Connecticut history, hasn’t broken one over the years.

“Not yet,” he joked soon after throwing down a casual windmill dunk, horsing around with a few kids during a break in his appearance as part of the “Andre’s All Stars” program, a partnership with the YMCA that has benefitted more than 500 children over the years.
